M uscles contracting when you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows from time to time can result in frown lines on your forehead, crow's feet around your eyes, lines at the corners of your mouth, or on your chin.

Wrinkles, no matter where they are on your face, make you look older and more tired.

When used for cosmetic purposes, BOTOX can temporarily erase those lines and can take the appearance of years off your face.

How Does BOTOX Work?

B OTOX works by preventing the release of acetylcholine, which under normal circumstances, facilitates muscle contraction. BOTOX Cosmetic Injections are a temporary, non-surgical solution to the treatment of moderate-to-severe frown lines (the dreaded “11” lines) and Crow’s feet. After the BOTOX injection into the neuromuscular tissue, the nerve impulses to the muscles are blocked, which relaxes the muscle. Since the muscles attach to the skin, relaxing the muscles eases the appearance of the skin lines.

BOTOX Candidates

Extra precautions should be taken if you have any of these conditions below:

  • Skin infection on or near the area to be treated
  • Bladder infection or inability to urinate (for treatment of an overactive bladder)
  • Neuromuscular conditions like myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton Syndrome
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Problem swallowing
  • General muscle weakness in your face
  • Blood disorders that cause excessive bleeding

Expected temporary side effects after treatment may include:

  • Bruising, redness, or some swelling in the spots where the injection was done. Avoid touching or rubbing your face unnecessarily for about 24-48 hours.
  • The inability to move facial muscles gives you a frozen facial expression.
  • Weak or droopy muscles in your face, especially around the eyelids and eyebrows.
  • Flu-like symptoms in the first 24 hours and a dry mouth.

BOTOX Injection

BOTOX Cosmetic effects are noticeable within 24-72 hours, though it begins to work well in 7-10 days after injection. The specialist does a facial assessment to determine the most suitable treatment areas, then the actual procedure is done, which takes about 10 minutes.

The powder is diluted in saline, then BOTOX injections themselves are done with very small needles, and most Knoxville Botox patients do not need any anesthetic at all.

Where pain or discomfort is a concern, ice or a small amount of topical numbing cream may be used if you desire. The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic usually last about 3-4 months or up to 12 months for some treatments, before re-treatment is necessary to maintain the effects.

BOTOX Recovery

You will be back on your feet almost immediately with little or no downtime. The only requirement is to keep your head level up for about 2 hours to prevent bruising around the areas injected. Strenuous activities like exercise or running and activities that require you to bend forward are discouraged for the next 6-24 hours.

Avoid alcohol starting at least a week before the treatment, hot drinks 30 minutes before the procedure, and any painkillers or anti-inflammatory medication that have blood-thinning effects. If you are on any medication for allergies, stiff muscles, lack of sleep, blood thinners, or had any other kind of BOTOX injections in the last four months, ensure that you let your specialist know beforehand.

How Much Does BOTOX Cost?

B OTOX is priced by the unit, so the total cost depends on how much is needed to get the desired effect. The prices can differ mostly based on your location or region. Some specialists will charge you for every unit of Botox used, ranging from about 10-20 dollars per unit. To get an idea of the overall cost, one vial of botox has 50 or 100 units. For a person in their 30's, it takes between 40 and 60 units for the forehead, glabella and crow’s feet.
